How much CBD should you take or give your pet?

Start with a lower dose and increase gradually.

The amount of CBD that you need, specifically, depends on a variety of factors. The main factors to account for are:

  • The condition or situation CBD is being used for.
  • Body weight.
  • Metabolism; which varies in different species of animals. (Horses may have a heart rate of 30-40 bpm, dogs 70-120 bpm and cats 140-200 bpm). Of course these are just approximate beats-per-minute rates as they may vary based on the animal’s size and if they are in a stressful situation.

Other factors to account for (that aren’t easily measurable) include:

  • Severity of symptoms; even if you use a specific dosage strength for a given purpose, depending on your symptoms, you may need a larger or smaller dosage of CBD.
  • Body chemistry and tolerance; everyone has different body chemistry, and CBD tolerance varies. You might need more to feel the same effects, or you might only need half of what people normally take.

CBD for Pets

  • Dogs and Cats; generally start with a low dose of 0.1-0.2mg per pound of body weight daily. Cats and smaller dogs might need their dose twice a day.

There is a lot of information circulating on the internet suggesting higher doses and research has shown in some situations that CBD may be helpful. Just be mindful of the source where you saw the information and make sure the article is written by a licensed veterinarian.

Check with your veterinarian to see what they recommend.

How quickly you’ll feel effects after using a product.

Time for effect/onset (absorption):

  • Oils: 10-30mins. Sublingually, place drops under the tongue and hold for 30-60 seconds (the longer, the better before swallowing). Skips the digestive process, leading to high bioavailability, which means more of the CBD/CBN stays active in your system.
  • Gummies / Pet Treats: 30-60mins (could take up to 2 hours). Orally, absorption will take longer due to the digestive process.
  • Smoking: 5-15mins (listed as a comparison). We do not offer smokable products. Inhaled, it travels directly into the lungs. The extensive surface area of the alveoli and their rich blood supply allow immediate, efficient transfer of CBD into the bloodstream. Skips the digestive process, leading to high bioavailability. Effects are typically felt very quickly, often within minutes.

These are average times, but absorption times may vary due to several factors including the bioavailability of the product.

Placing drops sublingually (under the tongue), the CBD/CBN will be absorbed faster through the mucous membranes and into the bloodstream.

When CBD/CBN is ingested orally, it will take longer because it has to go through the digestive system and liver’s first-pass metabolism. In the liver, enzymes metabolize a substantial amount of CBD/CBN through first-pass metabolism. Also, this process significantly reduces the active CBD/CBN circulating, leading to low bioavailability.
